Cool Shop: Somervelo in Boston, MA

If you are like me, it’s hard to think of the city of Boston, Massachusetts without thinking about bicycles. Boston is home to countless custom frame builders, racing legends and access to some wonderful scenic and challenging singletrack within the city limits. The current bicycling infrastructure has also helped grow Boston’s cycling community tremendously over the last decade. Well-marked dedicated bike lanes, paths away from traffic and a bike share program make getting around Boston by bike far more sensible than getting in your car.  

With all of the cycling going on in the city of Boston there are also a host of shops to cater to riders needs. In the heart of Union Square in the neighborhood of Somerville, two longtime mechanics opened Somervelo. J.T. Hargrove and Tom Estrada understand that the current state of the bike industry is unpredictable, but what is continuous is the need for quality service and repair.

While Somervelo doesn’t sell any new bikes, they are more than happy to update a classic or handle your custom build project. With so many custom builders in the area, it is not uncommon to see a Firefly, Geekhouse or Royal H in the stand. On a most recent visit, Tom was kitting out a classic handbuilt Serrotta with all new parts and custom wheels, a looker to be sure.

Somervelo is always inviting – with a little lounge area and some great branded gear it’s hard to walk out of there with just the spare tube you intended on picking up. Somervelo is also getting ready to open a second location in Allston, Massachusetts. If you find yourself in Union Square, grabbing a bite at the Independent or a donut from Union Square Donuts (you should, they are incredible), wash it down with a perfect pour over from Juliet and then head to Somervelo and say what’s up to J.T. and Tom.
