Bikepacking Trip – May 6-8, 2010

For our roundup of bikepacking gear in issue #150, Justin, Karl, Frank and Karen headed out for a 2.5-day journey around the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania, for a proper testing session. Conveniently, Frank lives in that area, so we set out from his cabin in the woods near Seven Springs. We covered around 30 miles each of the first two days, winding over mountains and next to streams via everything from paved back roads, to disused gravel roads, to rail-trails, to singletrack. We spent the first night at a beautiful spot on the shores of the Youghiogheny River, and the second in the woods of the Forbes State Forest (with the special permission of Ranger Pletscher – profuse thanks go to him!). The last day, we returned home via a nice series of singletrack trails that Frank had picked out for their minimum elevation gain – a wise choice.

It was an awesome trip, and we can’t wait to do it again
