Cleveland has Ray’s Indoor MTB Park, Camp Woodward has expanded their empire to a few locations in the United States, and you can find a velodrome in a few cities around the country. But did you know there are already two permanent cyclocross courses in our country, and a third one is coming?

While enjoying a mind-boggling level of popularity in Europe, cyclocross has been slowly gaining momentum in the United States. More and more people are participating in this spectator-friendly sport, and the world is staring to take notice. In fact, I’m sure you heard the story about Lousiville, Kentucky hosting the 2013 Cyclocross World Championships. That’s a big deal. A very big deal.

Around the time that announcement was made, cyclists around the country hopped a barrier for joy when they found Louisville is also home to a permanent cyclocross course. Joining Louisville in boasting the cycling coolness of a dedicated cyclocross course is Boulder, Colorado.

Today we have news a third city in the United States, and the second in Kentucky, will see the installation of a permanent cyclocross park.

A dedicated park for year-round cyclocross racing will be built within Devou Park in Covington, Kentucky—a city in the northern part of the state, just outside Cincinati, Ohio. Already home to an existing network of mountain bike trails, the park will be situated at the intersection of Montague and Sleepy Hollow roads. The course will be built upon an unused portion of the park, and will use other abandoned roads. Course developers will ensure course-routing will be low-maintenance and minimally invasive. “It was important to me in the course design to beautify and enhance the park as well,” says Matt Bell, the man behind the idea of the park.

Local leaders are also excited about the opportunities the park will bring to the area, and were instrumental in helping Bell realize his vision. “The city officials in Covington seem more conducive to getting things done.  Even so, I’m blown away at the level of excitement they had for the project.”
