Snowshoe World Cup: Women’s XCO

The stage was set for a proper mountain bike treat for the fans at Snowshoe Mountain Sunday afternoon. American Kate Courtney, one of the sports biggest stars looked to put on a show for the home fans. Along with the race at a hand, Courtney also was looking to seal the deal on the World Cup overall. The stage was set for a dual between Kate Courtney and Jolanda Neff to see who would take the overall.

Much like Friday nights short track race, Neff came out swinging on the first lap, getting to the front and putting down a blistering pace. Courtney countered and the two entered the rock garden at the top of course together. Neff would soon suffer from her early effort to put Courtney on the defense and began to fade back through the lead group. Short track winner Jenny Rissveds looked to repeat her Friday night performance but a late-race flat took her out of the front group.

As the lead group established itself with Pauline Ferrand-Prevot, Kate Courtney, Chloe Woodruff, Anne Terpstra, Rebecca McConnell, and Anne Last the rest of the field seemed to fade away a bit including Jolanda Neff. Continued attacks from Anne Terpstra and Rissveds put Courtney into trouble and she continued to yo-yo in and out of the group. In true PFP fashion, Prevot started pouring it on late in the race and her self and Terpstra would break free from the group. Prevot would cap off a perfect two weeks adding a World Cup win to her World Championship by out sprinting Terpstra.

Kate Courtney surged late and finished in 5th place which was enough to secure the overall World Cup title with Neff finishing in 11th on the day. The American fans were ecstatic to see their star celebrate a monumental victory on home soil. In the end, it was a perfect ending to a beautiful weekend of racing. (I know there was a men’s race but I need sleep first before we talk about that.)
