In memoriam: Steve Worland and Fabio Rattazzi

The international cycling community lost two of its own recently, Steve Worland and Fabio Rattazzi, and our staff mourns their passing.

British cycling journalist Steve Worland, a respected former racer and longtime journalist and bike tester for MBUK, What Mountain Bike, and recently singletrackworld.com and road.cc, passed away during a 5K run in his hometown of Bristol on Saturday, March 29, the same day as DZR Shoes founder and former racer Fabio Rattazzi, who battled cancer for several years.

“He lived every moment of life to the fullest; never giving anything less than 100 percent,” DZR said in a statement. “He was a visionary who was an inspiration and a driving force behind DZR shoes. He was a responsible and loving father, whom we’ll never forget. He bravely fought cancer for many years and continued to fight to the end. His fighting spirit will forever remain in our hearts.”

Rattazzi started his career in the bike industry as a sales rep for SRAM in 1998. Then after three years with MET helmets, product managing their development and marketing directions, he moved to Scott Sports from 2002-2008 where he was not just a chief product manager for body protection and bike helmets, but also an integral part of life amongst his dear friends and co-workers, according to DZR’s spokesperson.

There will be a service for Rattazzi in Italy on Saturday, April 5 and a memorial held in the USA on Sunday, April 19. Keith Bontrager is hosting a wake and celebration of Worland’s life at 153 Suburbia Avenue in Santa Cruz, Calif., on April 5 beginning at 7 p.m.
