SRAM readying new XX1 drivetrain with single chainring, 11-speeds

Just in time to give us something to talk about over the weekend, SRAM sent out a notice that they will be releasing a new drivetrain this summer dubbed XX1, designed around a single front chainring and an 11-speed cassette.
Single front chainring setups are becoming more and more popular as cassette ranges have grown, and SRAM is the first to design a group specifically around the idea. Details are slim at this point, but the cassette will likely include cogs larger than 36 teeth and possibly even smaller than 11 teeth.
Unlike a single chainring downhill setup, the XX1 group is designed for enduro and XC racing and is lighter than current setups, mostly due to ommission of parts like a front derailleur. Prototype shots also show it being run without any chain guide, made possible by the Type 2 chain management system in the rear derailleur.
SRAM says it will be trigger and GripShift compatible, though it will obviously have its own shifters. Hub spacing will stay at 135mm, but a special freehub is needed, only available from SRAM and DT Swiss at first.
No word on pricing or availability, though it will make its debut at Crankworx Les 2 Alpes from July 9-15.
