Review: SixSixOne Recon

The Recon is a new in-mold helmet from 661 that caters to a seemingly growing market of mountain bikers hungry for trail protection at an XC weight. The sizing of the S/M I’ve tested seems to be on point with other manufactures and provided almost skate-style coverage of the sides and back.
661 attached the straps to the bottom rim of the helmet, not on the inside, so they stay comfortably off your face. No sweaty straps rubbing my cheeks. This also makes wearing sunglasses easy—there’s no need to remove the Recon to slide eyewear on and off. The visor is more show than go. It’s barely in my field of vision and isn’t adjustable. But it sure helps make the Recon look good.
Eighteen vents and a couple air channels make the Recon pretty breathable, especially on my almost bald head. Even on climbs my head stays relatively cool. The pinch-style Detox fit system has kept the helmet in place, but requires two hands to adjust; it’s not something I can safely recommend doing on the fly. The pads are removable for washing.
The Recon is fairly light, looks great, offers good protection and is comfortable, what else do you need?
