Now THAT is a bike pile

It’s meaning may be open to interpretation, but there is little doubt that the 65-foot, 10,000-pound obelisk recently erected in Santa Rosa, Calif., is an impressive sight.

Created by Petaluma, Calif., artist Mark Grieve and his partner Ilana Spector, the piece towers over Santa Rosa Avenue, surrounded by car dealerships and body-shops.

The bicycles – they total more than 300 – were donated from surrounding communities and assembled in a warehouse around a rectangular frame. Grieve told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat that he didn’t choose bicycle to make a political statement, but rather because they were an inexpensive material to work with.

The piece, titled Cyclisk, will be formally dedicated the second week of October.
